QE2 To Receive Regal Farewell
Thursday, April 10th, 2008
Cunard Cruises favourite QE2 is to receive a regal farewell from none other than Her Majesty The Queen before she retires from service as a cruise ship and becomes a floating hotel off the coast of Dubai.
This June, 41 years after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2 launched the 70,000-tonne ship, the monarch will visit Southampton to say goodbye to her namesake.
QE2 was launched by Her Majesty at Clydebank on September 20th 1967 and has travelled further than any ship and carried more than 2.5 million guests during her service.
"We are delighted and honoured that The Queen has chosen to visit QE2 to wish her farewell. Her Majesty has taken a close interest in the ship over the last forty years and I am certain this will be a memorable occasion for all involved," president of Cunard Cruises Carol Marlow commented.
QE2 has sailed on a total of 25 world cruises and retires from service later this year in November.
As QE2 leaves service, preparations are under way for the introduction of a new cruise ship - Queen Victoria.
