A cruise ship was struck by a barge over the weekend on the Mississippi River near New Orleans, resulting in a 30 ft gash in the hull of the liner. No passengers were injured, but a planned five-day cruise on the vessel has been cancelled.
The 2,100-passenger Carnival Cruise Lines’ ship, Fantasy, was returning from a cruise in the Caribbean when it was struck by a barge on the port side.
Tim Gallagher, vice president of public relations for Carnival, commented that the ship’s services were working well after the incident, reports the Times Picayune, but there would not be sufficient time to operate the cruise following repairs.
He added that holidaymakers were invited to spend Saturday night onboard the cruise ship, with future discounts offered to those affected by the incident.
"We will feed and entertain them," said Mr Gallagher, before promising a full refund and 25 per cent discount on three to five-day cruises to travellers involved.
The company has recently announced that Carnival Dream and Carnival Magic will be the names of its 130,000-tonne cruise liners due to enter service in October 2009 and June 2011.
