A Mediterranean cruise is the ideal option for a ‘first-timer’, according to travel expert Jane Archer.
Writing in the Telegraph, Ms Archer stated that a seven-night European cruise was the perfect way for "beginners to find their cruising legs".
"In cruising terms, it stretches from the Iberian peninsula east to Turkey, and south to North Africa, taking in beaches, Roman ruins and some of the world’s finest cities on the way," she explained.
Recent figures from the Passenger Shipping Association show that 543,000 people enjoyed Mediterranean cruises in the last year - an increase of 50 per cent over the last decade.
Some of Ms Archer’s "top places to consider when choosing an itinerary include Venice, with its "spellbinding" views and Napales, which is described as a "delightfully chaotic city".
The Mediterranean is also ideal for the more seasoned cruiser, with many cruise lines now offering lengthy voyages, taking in north African destinations and Croatia.
Cruise lines currently offering Mediterranean itineraries incude Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Lines and Costa Cruises.
