Hostage Cruisers Back In Britain
Tuesday, April 8th, 2008
Hundreds of cruise holidaymakers finally returned to Britain yesterday after Van Gogh’s cruise itinerary was extended for two days when it was impounded in Madeira.
Van Gogh is now operated by Van Gogh Cruises, but was held at the port after a legal dispute flared up between administrators and the ship’s previous operator Travelscope.
The passengers onboard Van Gogh were originally due to dock at Falmouth following a three month world cruise on Saturday April 5th 2008.
"The number one question on everyone’s lips is why they didn’t wait until Falmouth to arrest the boat. We are being used as pawns by these companies," one passenger, David Marquiss, was quoted by asap news as saying.
He added that locals had begun referring to the passengers, who were not allowed to disembark at Madeira, as "the hostages".
Mr Marquiss added that the handle ‘did not’ go down very well.
