Following the hospitalisation of seven cruise holiday passengers from the Black Watch liner last week in Stockholm, with six exhibiting pneumonia-like symptoms, Fred Olsen Cruises has stated that it will take steps to eliminate the infection from its vessel.
Tests are being conducted to ascertain the cause of the illness, with reports emerging that two Britons have tested positive for the Legionella bacterium.
Fred Olsen Cruises closed the swimming pools, whirlpool baths and swimmex machines as a precautionary measure, while it also finished the cruise holiday two days early.
Wendy Hooper-Greenhill, a spokesperson for Fred Olsen Cruises, said: "If we get the ship back, we can get all the passengers and people off which will allow us to do a very thorough disinfection and cleansing."
There has been speculation that the source of the infection came from fountains visited on a shore excursion in St Petersburg, though these reports are yet to be confirmed.
