Cruise holidays will remain resilient throughout the economic downturn, it has been claimed.
Bill Gibbons, director of the Passenger Shipping Association (PSA), said that although the cruise industry isn’t immune from the effect of the credit crunch, it may fare better than other travel sectors.
According to the PSA, cruises offer exceptional value for money, with holidaymakers able to pay in sterling for their trip in advance and, due to the all-inclusive nature of cruises, there are very few extras to pay for.
"Secondly, with the euro exchange rate, if you are booking in the UK you can pay for your holiday in pounds, you don’t have to worry about the euro," Mr Gibbons added.
Figures released by the PSA earlier this year revealed that 1.5 million people took a cruise holiday during 2008.
Further results show that 23 per cent of those departed from a UK port such as Southampton.
