Cruise Lines Go Green

Carnival Corporation - the world’s largest cruise group - has outlined a number of measures aimed at saving energy and reducing fuel costs.
The Carnival Corporation, which is currently responsible for operating ships across a number of different brands such as Holland America, Cunnard and Costa, has seen its fuel bills increase by around $158 million over the first three months, TravelMole reports.
A number of possible energy saving measures have been identified by the group, including the harnessing of waste heat, turning off lights and coating ships in special paint, enabling them to glide through the water more easily.
The corporation predicted earlier this year that, due to the rising cost of oil, its fuel expenditure would rise by $752 million compared to 2007.
Other solutions suggested by senior executives from the Holland America Line include planning itineraries more effectively and making alterations to the trim of ships.
The Guardian last year reported that the number of Britons taking cruise holidays had doubled over the last decade.
