Cruise Liner Boost For Antigua?

Cruise liner boost for Antigua?
Antigua could be set for a boost in cruise tourism with the arrival of a number winter ships at the West Indian island.

Following a relatively slow summer tourism season, the sector is preparing for an upturn as seven new ships call at the port this season, the Antigua Sun said.

It noted the first of these - the Arcadia from P&O - arrived at the island yesterday on a transatlantic voyage.

Nathan Dundas, president of the Antigua and Barbuda Cruise Tourism Association, said: "If the bookings hold as we have received them and we are not hindered by any weather conditions we can still expect to have a good winter season."

He added the Carnival Destiny would replace the Carnival Victory as one of the most anticipated new ships making weekly visits to Antigua.

In total, the cruise holiday sector expects to hit its target of more than 620,000 passengers during the 2008-09 season.

P&O claims "everything about Arcadia is indulgent", citing its size, facilities, child-free atmosphere and over 3,000 British artworks.
