Costa Cruises: Well Outrun Pirates

Rather than churn out cruise news in a rather bland way we've decided to discontinue the news in this format and use our cruise blog to cover any newsworthy events.

Costa Cruises: Well outrun pirates
Costa Cruises has revealed that it will not be adopting a passenger drop-off policy when traversing the Gulf of Aden.

Attacks on ships from Somali pirates in the gulf have led to some operators adding a third stop to their itineraries, allowing them to drop off passengers and pick them up later.

However, the Italy-based company believes that such a measure will not be necessary for its Dubai-bound cruises, as its ships are capable of outrunning the pirates.

Costa’s chairman Pier Luigi Foschi told Fairplay: “We believe that our security measures guarantee security.”

Another operator - Germany’s Plantours and Partner - evacuated one of its ships in Yemen over the weekend before heading across the Gulf.

The 200 passengers were given a three-day land-based visit to the country amid fears that the ship could be targeted by pirates, according to USA Today.
