Renowned scientist Sharon Smith has officially named Celebrity Cruises’ latest vessel, the Celebrity Solstice.
The 2,850-guest ship will begin its inaugural cruise season on November 23rd and is one of the most eagerly anticipated ships ever.
Professor Smith has undertaken pioneering research on the oceans - including studies on how climate change could affect the feeding patterns of whales and other creatures - and Chairman of Celebrity Cruises Richard Fein described her as the ideal person to perform such a ceremony.
"We are genuinely privileged to have such a remarkable woman serve as Godmother of this remarkable ship," he commented.
The ceremony took place in Fort Lauderdale and the ship will then begin its first cruise around the eastern Caribbean later this month.
Celebrity Solstice is the first of five Solstice sister ships - the others include the Celebrity Equinox and Celebrity Eclipse, along with two more which have yet to be named.
