In a potential boost to the city of New Orleans, Carnival Cruises has announced the signing of a two-year deal to keep its Carnival Fantasy liner sailing through the port on its cruise holidays.
Earlier this year, Carnival Cruises had described the slow recovery of the city - affectionately dubbed the Big Easy - following Hurricane Katrina, blaming media reports focusing on the hardest hit areas that were in fact away from the tourist hub.
The company now suggests that the city could be seeing an influx of passengers from further afield than the city borders, the Associated Press reports, perhaps including those on a fly cruise.
Vicki Freed, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Carnival Cruises, noted a "a steady expansion of the geographic source markets for passengers."
Gary LaGrange, president and chief executive officer Port of New Orleans, reports that 11 million tourists visited New Orleans in 2004, with many cruise holiday passengers spending time in the city before or after their voyage.
